Dalat Palace Golf Club Description
The Dalat Palace Golf Club is a scenic and enjoyable course located 5,000 feet above sea level in the temperate highlands of Dalat. The course plays downhill to the Xuan Huong Lake, and golfers are reminded of the days when leisure was a norm for French colonialists. The local Vietnamese staff welcome guests with warm smiles and exceptional service, making Dalat a popular retreat for decades.
Originally built as a 9-hole layout in 1922, it was completed as a full 18-hole course with the support of Vietnam’s most prominent golfer, Bao Dai, the last emperor of Vietnam. The course saw its share of ups and downs, including abandonment after WWII and again after the reunification of Vietnam in 1975. However, it was revived in 1993 by a group of American investors, leading to a major renovation that once again put Dalat Palace Golf Club on the map as one of Southeast Asia’s premier golf destinations.
The course winds through stately pine trees to oversized and delicately manicured bent grass greens—the only ones of their kind in Asia. Thanks to the cooler climate in Dalat, it’s the only golf course in Southeast Asia featuring bent grass tees, fairways, and greens, considered the ultimate playing surface in golf. The large, undulating greens are maintained to impeccable standards and present a challenging yet rewarding experience for golfers.
The Brett Stensen-designed course, measuring 7,009 yards, provides a challenge for golfers of all levels. Low handicap players will be tested by a series of lakes that weave through ten of the eighteen holes and strategically placed bunkers that penalize risky shots. High handicappers will appreciate the large, accommodating greens and wide, forgiving fairways.
Dalat Palace features par 3’s ranging from 164 to 234 yards and par 5’s up to 556 yards. These varied lengths require players to use each club in their bag, a hallmark of a well-designed course. Four different tee boxes on each hole make the course appealing to golfers of all abilities.
The course’s original clubhouse, built in 1956, is still in use today. Fully restored, it includes a pro shop, restaurant, wood-burning fireplace, and outdoor patio areas. The clubhouse restaurant serves both superb Vietnamese and international cuisine. The golf club is complemented by a full practice facility, including a 290-yard grass driving range, putting green, and practice bunkers. The clubhouse is surrounded by beautiful gardens, with views of terraced rice fields and pine forests.
Surveys by Golf Digest in 2001, 2003, 2005, and 2007 ranked Dalat Palace Golf Club as the top course in Vietnam. Asian Golf Monthly in 2007 recognized it as one of the top-10 courses in Asia. The club is also a member of the Finest Golf Clubs of The World (London), further solidifying its reputation as Vietnam’s best golf course.
